Job Description

Perform metallurgical analysis on both steel and aluminum for various structural and welded automotive components. Analysis may include validation of microstructure and mechanical properties against an industrial and/or customer requirement, testing for research purposes, or validation of welded components. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Adhere to Quality, Safety, and Environmental Policies

  2. Understand and follow all required industrial (ASTM, ISO, JIS, DIN, EN, etc.) and customer standards

  3. Prepare mechanical test specimens using electrical discharge machining (EDM)

  4. Micro-cut (wet saw), etch, mount and polish micro-samples to industrial and customer specifications

  5. Interpret base metal microstructures and component weld qualities

  6. Manage laboratory work requests and create laboratory reports

  7. Ensure calibrations remain current

  8. Assist with maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment

  9. Perform all work in accordance with OSHA, MIOSHA and Gestamp corporate standards

  10. Other tasks requested by management

Limited travel for training or plant support may be required periodically

Job Requirements


  1. Associates degree in Metallurgical testing is strongly preferred.
  2. 2+ year experience desired in similar metallurgical laboratory position


  1. Strong analytical skills; with the ability to collect and analyze data.
  2. Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  3. Detail oriented and performs tasks methodically and systematically.
  4. Proficient in PAX-it image analysis system (or similar) is beneficial
  5. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  6. Knowledge of chemical usage and safety, most notably sulfuric acid and nitric acid.

Ability to use various laboratory & shop tools:  Plasma arc cutter, bench grinders, other basic hand tools
